Start with the right information
Advice after a missed dose depends on the medicine, the schedule and how late the dose is. Check the patient leaflet for your exact product. If it is unclear, ask a pharmacist or the team managing your treatment.
Have these details ready
- Medicine name, strength and formulation.
- The prescribed schedule.
- When you last took it and when the next dose is due.
- Whether more than one dose was missed.
- Any symptoms or other dosing mistakes.
Avoid a guessed catch-up dose
Do not double a dose on your own to compensate. Some time-sensitive treatments, including insulin, epilepsy treatment and transplant medicines, need prompt individual advice. Do not use a general online rule to decide what to do with them.
Prevent the next missed dose
Once your clinician or pharmacist has advised what to do, consider a reminder or a written schedule. If missed doses are frequent, discuss barriers such as side effects, cost or a confusing routine. Do not redesign the dosing schedule without checking.
