BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) Calculator
Resting energy estimate with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation
Equation & limitations
- Equation
- Men: 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5; women: 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161 (W kg, H cm, A years)
- Version
- Mifflin-St Jeor 1990
- Source
- Mifflin MD, et al. A new predictive equation for resting energy expenditure in healthy individuals. Am J Clin Nutr. 1990;51:241–247.
- Appropriate in
- Healthy non-pregnant adults ≈19–78 years (the equation’s derivation range). BMR ≠ total daily energy.
- Limitations
- BMR is resting energy only — total needs add activity, illness and stress factors not captured here.
- Not for critically ill or mechanically ventilated patients (different predictive equations are used).
- Results are estimates; individual variation is several percent.
