CHA₂DS₂-VASc Calculator
Point score of thromboembolic risk factors in atrial fibrillation
Equation & limitations
- Equation
- Score = (heart failure 1) + (hypertension 1) + (age 65–74: 1; ≥75: 2) + (diabetes 1) + (stroke/TIA 2) + (vascular disease 1) + (female sex 1)
- Version

- Appropriate in
- Non-valvular atrial fibrillation; the score supports, but does not replace, stroke-risk discussion.
- Limitations
- A point score is NOT a treatment order — thresholds and anticoagulant choice are clinical decisions.
- The female-sex point is a risk-modifier; young women with no other factors are not candidates for anticoagulation on that point alone.
- Valvular AF (e.g. mechanical valve, moderate–severe mitral stenosis) is managed differently and out of scope.
For educational use. Results support, and do not replace, clinical judgement — check them against the patient and local guidelines.
