Child-Pugh Score Calculator
Severity grade of cirrhosis from five clinical/lab components
Equation & limitations
- Equation
- Each of the five components scores 1–3; total 5–15 → class A (5–6), B (7–9), C (10–15)
- Version
- Child-Pugh as modified by Pugh 1973
- Source
- Pugh RN, Murray-Lyon IM, Dawson JL, Pietroni MC, Williams R. Transection of the oesophagus for bleeding oesophageal varices. Br J Surg. 1973;60:646–649.
- Appropriate in
- Cirrhosis prognostication (original use: selecting patients for portal-decompression surgery); used for peri-procedural risk and listing discussion.
- Limitations
- Not validated in acute liver failure outside cirrhosis; albumin thresholds assume standard assays.
- A class is one prognostic input — it does not capture all factors (variceal bleeding, HCC, renal function) that modify risk.
- Do not use alone to decide transplant listing or treatment eligibility.
