Calculators/Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)

Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) Calculator

Consciousness score from eye, verbal and motor responses

Equation & limitations

Equation
GCS = E (1–4) + V (1–5) + M (1–6); range 3–15
Version
Glasgow Coma Scale (Teasdale & Jennett 1974)
Source
Teasdale G, Jennett B. Assessment of coma and impaired consciousness. Lancet. 1974;2(7872):81–84.
Appropriate in
Adults and children ≥2 years with acute brain injury or encephalopathy.
Limitations
  • Record the BEST response on the better side; the scale assumes the patient can be assessed (intubation and sedation confound the verbal component).
  • A single number loses the E/V/M pattern, which is more informative — quote components too.
  • Not a substitute for a structured neurological examination or imaging decision.

For educational use. Results support, and do not replace, clinical judgement — check them against the patient and local guidelines.
