HAS-BLED Calculator
Point score of bleeding-risk factors during anticoagulation
Equation & limitations
- Equation
- Score = hypertension 1 + abnormal renal 1 + abnormal liver 1 + stroke 1 + bleeding 1 + labile INR 1 + elderly (>65) 1 + drugs 1 + alcohol 1
- Version
- HAS-BLED (Pisters 2010)
- Source
- Pisters R, Lane DA, Nieuwlaat R, de Vos CB, Crijns HJ, Lip GY. A novel user-friendly score (HAS-BLED) to assess 1-year risk of major bleeding. Chest. 2010;138:1093–1100.
- Appropriate in
- Adults with atrial fibrillation being considered for anticoagulation.
- Limitations
- The score is one input to a shared clinician–patient decision; a high score alone must not be used to withhold anticoagulation.
- Correctable factors (blood pressure, labile INR, alcohol, drug interactions) are the practical point of the score.
- HAS-BLED was derived in AF populations; using it in other anticoagulated groups is an extrapolation.
