MELD Score Calculator
Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score (liver-sick severity)
Equation & limitations
- Equation
- MELD = 3.78 × ln(bilirubin) + 11.2 × ln(INR) + 9.57 × ln(creatinine) + 6.43; each lab <1.0 is set to 1.0, creatinine >4.0 is capped at 4.0
- Version
- MELD (Kamath 2001), UNOS lab floors/creatinine cap applied
- Source
- Kamath PS, et al. A model to predict survival in patients with end-stage liver disease. Hepatology. 2001;33:464–470.
- Appropriate in
- Adults with chronic liver disease awaiting transplant-listing discussion. Creatinine cap assumes the patient is not on dialysis (dialysis is not an input here).
- Limitations
- A prognostic score, not a transplant indication on its own; listing involves many non-MELD factors.
- Hepatorenal treatment / dialysis status changes how creatinine is entered — this tool does not capture dialysis.
- Original MELD-Na and living-donor variants differ; only the classic MELD is computed.
For educational use. Results support, and do not replace, clinical judgement — check them against the patient and local guidelines.
