Overview
Aescin is an active principle of Aesculus. Aescin is used for the prevention and treatment of various peripheral disorders including hemorrhoids and post-operative edema.
Indications
Aescin is primarily indicated in conditions like Hemorrhoids, Musculoskeletal disorders, Pain, Peripheral vascular disease, Post operative edema, Rheumatoid arthritis, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Diarrhea.
Contraindications
Aescin is contraindicated in conditions like Renal impairment.
Side Effects
Aescin produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Renal failure, Anaphylaxis. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Aescin therapy. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Aescin include Vomiting, Diarrhea, Dilated pupils, Lack of coordination, Paralysis, Muscle twitching.
Warnings
Acute renal failure has been reported in patients given higher doses, sometimes in conjunction with other nephrotoxic drugs.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
20 mg (20 (20)) 24 hourly IV — For the prevention and treatment of post-operative oedema.
