Overview
Argipressin is a form of vasopressin. Vasopressin is the pressor and antidiuretic principle of posterior lobe of pituitary gland. It may be prepared by synthesis or by extraction from the glands of healthy, domestic animals used for food in man. Vasopressin plays an important role in the long term control of blood pressure through its action on the kidney to increase water reabsorption.
Indications
Argipressin is primarily indicated in conditions like Bleeding esophageal varices, Diabetes insipidus.
Contraindications
Argipressin is contraindicated in conditions like Hypertension, Renal diseases, Cardiovascular disease, Primary polydipsia.
Side Effects
Argipressin produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Myocardial infarction, Myocardial Ischemia, Cardiac dysrhythmias, GI infarction, Hyponatremia, which are responsible for the discontinuation of Argipressin therapy. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute over dosage of Argipressin include Angina.
Warnings
Avoid use Argipressin in patients with chronic nephritis with nitrogen retention. Use with caution and in small doses in patients with vascular disease, especially of coronary arteries. It should be given with care to patients with asthma, migraine, epilepsy, heart failure or hypertension. Fluid retention should be adjusted to avoid hyponatremia.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pediatrics, Geriatrics, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
0.003 to 0.01 IU/kg.min (0.0065 (0.0065)) As recommended. IV Inf — For 24-Hours
0.029 IU/kg.min (0.029 (0.029)) As recommended. IV Inf — Maintenance, Every 1-2 Hour for Several Days
Child Dosage
0.025 to 0.5 IU /kg (0.26 (0.2625)) 8 hourly Suibcutaneous — Dose foe diabetes insipidus
0.25 to 0.5 IU/kg (0.38 (0.375)) 8 hourly Intra Muscular — Dose for diabetes insipidus
Neonatal Dosage
0.025 to 0.5 IU /kg (0.26 (0.2625)) 8 hourly Suibcutaneous — Dose foe diabetes insipidus
0.25 to 0.5 IU/kg (0.38 (0.375)) 8 hourly Intra Muscular — Dose for diabetes insipidus
