Overview
Benzydamine is a locally acting nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with local anesthetic and analgesic properties for pain relief and anti-inflammatory treatment of inflammatory conditions of the mouth and throat. Benzydamine is used topically for musculoskeletal pains and for sore throat.
Indications
Benzydamine is primarily indicated in conditions like Inflammation, Radiation-Associated with Mucositis, Acute pharyngitis , Post operative edema, Post-traumatic edema, , Urogenital tract inflammation.
Contraindications
Benzydamine is contraindicated in conditions like Agitation, Hypersensitivity.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Benzydamine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Nausea, Skin rashes, Visual disorders, Epigastric discomfort, Redness, Burning, Numbness.
Warnings
It should be used with caution in pregnancy, breast-feeding and patient with renal impairment, May cause burning sensation in patients with compromised mucosal integrity.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
0.15 % (0.15 (0.15)) 3 hourly Gargle — Swish for 30 Seconds 5 % (5 (5)) 8 hourly Topical — 50 mg (50 (50)) 8 hourly PO — Frequency may be increased upto 4 times/day if needed.
Child Dosage
