Boric Acid

Boric acid is used topically as a skin protectant for relief of discomfort of chapped skin, chafed skin, diaper rash, dry skin, abrasions, sunburn, windburn, insect bites, or other skin irritations and has been used topically for the treatment of superficial fungal infections; however, the drug is generally considered as lacking substantial evidence of efficacy for these uses.

Boric Acid is contraindicated in conditions like Pregnancy, Breast feeding.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Boric Acid include Vomiting, Diarrhea, Convulsions, Shock, Circulatory collapse. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Boric Acid are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Erythematous rash.

There is a risk of developing systemic toxicity from the topical application of boric acid preparations, especially if the skin is broken.

Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Topical — As Required Scraped Dose — As a skin protectant for the relief of discomfort associated with various skin conditions, 5% boric acid ointment is applied topically to the affected area 3 or 4 times daily. When used for self-medication in the treatment of superficial fungal infections, a thin layer of 0.5–5% boric acid ointment may be applied topically to the affected area twice daily in the morning and at night or as directed. Boric acid ointment should not be used for self-medication of athlete’s foot or ringworm for longer than 4 weeks or of jock itch for longer than 2 weeks. If the condition persists or recurs, a physician or pharmacist should be consulted.
