Overview
Brompheniramine (Maleate) is an antihistaminic 1st generation drug. Brompheniramine (Maleate) is probably effective for temporary relief of hay fever (allergic rhinitis affecting the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory tract caused by pollen of certain plants) and upper respiratory allergic symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes, sneezing.
Indications
Brompheniramine (Maleate) is primarily indicated in conditions like Allergic conjunctivitis, Allergic rhinitis, Dermatitis, NSAID associated ulceration, Urticaria, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Asthma.
Contraindications
Brompheniramine (Maleate) is contraindicated in conditions like Documented hypersensitivity to any component of the drug, Porphyria, Nursing women.
Side Effects
The most frequent adverse reactions to Brompheniramine Maleate 1 mg Drops include: sedation, dryness of mouth, nose and throat; thickening of bronchial secretions; dizziness. Other adverse reactions may include: Dermatologic- urticaria, drug rash, photosensitivity, pruritus Cardiovascular System- hypotension, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, palpitations Central Nervous System (CNS)- disturbed coordination, tremor, irritability, insomnia, visual disturbances, weakness, nervousness, convulsion, headache, euphoria, and dysphoria. G.U. System- urinary frequency, difficult urination. G.I. System- epigastric discomfort, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation. Respiratory System- tightness of chest and wheezing, shortness of breath. Hematologic System- hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis.
Warnings
Brompheniramine should be used with caution in bone marrow depression. Patients should observe caution while driving or performing other task requiring alertness because it may cause drowsiness. It should be used with caution in patients with urinary retention, history of bronchial asthma, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular or liver disease. It should be used with caution in person with acute or chronic respiratory impairment, especially in children. Do not administer subcutaneously, because irritation or lesion may occur.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, Geriatrics, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
