Overview
Carbenoxolone (Na) is a synthetic derivative of glycyrrhizic acid, an agent extracted from licorice, having marked anti-infammatory actions and aldosterone like activity. It has been shown to be effective in healing both gastric and duodenal ulcers.
Indications
Carbenoxolone (Na) is primarily indicated in conditions like Aphthous mouth ulceration, Benign gastric ulcer, Duodenal ulcer, Peptic esophagitis.
Contraindications
Carbenoxolone (Na) is contraindicated in conditions like Hypertension, Cardiac failure, Hypokalemia, Renal diseases, Hepatic disease.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Carbenoxolone (Na), which give rise to further complications include Hypokalemia, Fluid retention, Increased blood pressure.Carbenoxolone (Na) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Hypokalemia, Hypertension, Cardiac failure, Papilledema. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Carbenoxolone (Na) therapy.The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute over dosage of Carbenoxolone (Na) include Hypokalemia. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Carbenoxolone (Na) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Weight gain, Increased weight.
Warnings
Avoid carbenoxolone in patients with hypokalemia, in elderly patients, in children. It should be used with caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension or impaired kidney or liver function. Avoid use during pregnancy.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, Geriatrics, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
0.1 to 0.12 mg/kg (0.11 (0.11)) 8 hourly Inhalation — twice a day.
0.714 mg/kg (0.71 (0.714)) 6 hourly PO — For 6-12 Weeks
Child Dosage
