Overview

Carbocysteine is also called carbocisteine, is a mucolytic agent that reduces the viscosity of sputum and so can be used to help relieve the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and bronchiectasis by allowing the sufferer to bring up sputum more easily

Indications

Carbocysteine is primarily indicated in conditions like Advanced or metastatic breast cancer, Glue ear, Respiratory tract disorders.

Contraindications

Documented hypersensitivity to Carbocysteine, Asthma

Side Effects

The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Carbocysteine, which give rise to further complications include Convulsions, GI bleeding. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute over dosage of Carbocysteine include GI disturbances. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Carbocysteine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Myalgia, Dyspnea, Palpitation, Skin rashes, Psychiatric disturbance, Urinary incontinence.

Warnings

Carbocisteine should be used with caution in patients with history of peptic ulcer.

High Risk Groups

Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

10.71 mg/kg (11 (10.71)) 8 hourly PO — Initial 7.14 mg/kg (7.1 (7.14)) 8 hourly PO — Maintenance
