Overview

Cefotaxime is a cephalosporin (SEF a low spor in) antibiotic . Cefotaxime is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections, including severe or life-threatening forms. Cefotaxime is also used to prevent infection in people having certain types of surgery . Cefotaxime may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Indications

Contraindications

You should not use cefotaxime if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to any type of cephalosporin antibiotic (cefdinir, cefalexin, Keflex, Omnicef, and others). Tell your doctor if you have ever had: an allergy to penicillin; kidney disease; liver disease ; a stomach or intestinal disorder such as colitis ; diabetes ; or heart problems. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat , burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling). Cefotaxime may cause serious side effects. Call your doctor at once if you have: severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody (even if it occurs months after your last dose); burning, irritation, or skin changes where the injection was given; dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); a seizure; fever, chills, tiredness; or easy bruising, unusual bleeding, pale skin, cold hands and feet. Common side effects of cefotaxime may include: pain, bruising, swelling, or other irritation where the injection was given; diarrhea; fever; or rash, itching . This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

You should not use cefotaxime if you are allergic to cefotaxime or another cephalosporin antibiotic ( cefdinir , cefalexin, Keflex, Omnicef , and others).

Adult Dosage

0.5 to 1 g (0.75 (0.75)) 24 hourly IM — GONOCOCCAL INFECTION. 1 to 4 g (2.5 (2.5)) 24 hourly prophylactic use to redeuce postoperative infections — 1.5 to 6 g (3.8 (3.75)) As recommended. infection due to multiresistant organism in 2 to 4 divided doses. — 2 to 12 g (7 (7)) 4 hourly for bone and joint infection — 2 to 4 g/dose (3 (3)) 12 hourly IV,IM — Frequency may be increased to 3 times/day. for uninary tract infection. 3 to 6 g/dose (4.5 (4.5)) 24 hourly IV,IM — for septicemia and endocarditis 3 to 6 g/dose (4.5 (4.5)) 24 hourly intra abnominal infection —

Child Dosage

100 to 200 mg (150 (150)) 8 hourly Intra Muscular — 2 to 4 divided doses. and 200mg dose given in 24hr daily. 50 mg/kg (50 (50)) 8 hourly Intra Venous — -

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially: another injected antibiotic; or a diuretic or "water pill." This list is not complete. Other drugs may affect cefotaxime, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins , and herbal products . Not all possible drug interactions are listed here.

Storage

Dry Powder for Inj Store at room temperature, Below 30°C. Protect from Sunlight and Heat. Prefrozen Inj Store Below -20°C. Freezing is recommended. Thawed Store at room temperature or refrigerator. Use within 10 days if refrigerated and within 24 hrs if kept at room temperature.
