Overview

Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin (SEF a low spor in) antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs, skin, bones, joints, bladder, or kidneys. Cefuroxime is also used to treat gonorrhea, sepsis, or early Lyme disease . Cefuroxime injection is sometimes given before and after a surgery to prevent infection. Cefuroxime may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Indications

Contraindications

Cefuroxime can cause serious or life-threatening allergic reactions. You should not use cefuroxime if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to an antibiotic, such as: cefuroxime, cefadroxil , cefdinir, cefoxitin, cefprozil, ceftriaxone , cephalexin , Keflex, Omnicef, and others; avibactam, relebactam, sulbactam, tazobactam, vaborbactam, and others; or amoxicillin (Amoxil, Augmentin, Moxatag), ampicillin , dicloxacillin , oxacillin, penicillin, and others. Tell your doctor if you have ever had: an stomach or intestinal disorder such as colitis; kidney disease; liver disease ; or heart problems. Cefuroxime oral suspension may contain phenylalanine and could be harmful if you have phenylketonuria (PKU). Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are being treated for gonorrhea: Having gonorrhea during pregnancy may increase the risk of complications including premature birth, low birth weight, or gonorrhea developing the newborn. The benefit of treating this condition may outweigh any risks to the baby. Not approved for use by anyone younger than 3 months old.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat , burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling). Cefuroxime may cause serious side effects. Call your doctor at once if you have: severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody (even if it occurs months after your last dose); jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); fever, chills; a seizure; or chest pain. Common side effects of cefuroxime may include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; flu-like symptoms; vaginal itching or discharge; or diaper rash (in people using the oral suspension). This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Adult Dosage

1.78 mg/kg (1.8 (1.78)) 12 hourly PO — - 250 to 500 mg (380 (375)) 12 hourly PO — Should be taken after food for optimum absorption. The usual course is seven days.

Child Dosage

15 to 0 mg/kg (7.5 (7.5)) 12 hourly maximum of 500mg daily — 250 to 0 mg (120 (125)) 12 hourly otitus media over 2 years of age. —

Neonatal Dosage

10 mg/kg (10 (10)) 12 hourly maximum of 250mg daily. More than 3 months of age. — 125 mg (120 (125)) 12 hourly maximum of 500mg daily. More than 3 months of age. —

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially: any other IV antibiotic; probenecid ; a diuretic or "water pill"; a blood thinner --warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven; or a stomach acid reducer -- esomeprazole , famotidine , Nexium, Pepcid, Prevacid, Prilosec, Tagamet, Zantac, and others. This list is not complete. Other drugs may affect cefuroxime, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products . Storage

Dry Powder for Inj Store at room temperature. Protect from Sunlight. Oral Susp (reconstituted) Store in a well closed container, at room temperature, Below 25°C or in refrigerator. Do not Freeze. Use within 10 days if refrigerated and within 10 days if kept at room temperature. Premixed Frozen Soln for Inj Store Below -20°C. Tab, Syrup, Dry Powder for Oral Susp Store Below 40°C. Protect from Sunlight. Thawed Store at room temperature or refrigerator. Use within 7days if refrigerated and within 24 hrs if kept at room temperature.
