Chlormethiazole (Edisylate)

Prochlorperazine is used for the control of severe nausea and vomiting of various etiologies. The drug is effective for the management of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and that caused by toxins, radiation, or cytotoxic drugs. Prochlorperazine also is effective for the relief of acute migraine attacks and associated nausea and vomiting. Prochlorperazine is not effective in preventing vertigo or motion sickness, or for the management of emesis caused by the action of drugs on the nodose ganglion or locally on the GI tract. Because safety of prochlorperazine for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy has not been established, use of the drug is not recommended during pregnancy except in cases of severe nausea and vomiting so serious and intractable that, in the judgment of the clinician, pharmacologic intervention is required and the potential benefits justify the possible risks to the fetus.

Chlormethiazole (Edisylate) is contraindicated in conditions like Pulmonary insufficiency.

The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Chlormethiazole (Edisylate), which give rise to further complications include Dependency.Chlormethiazole (Edisylate) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Respiratory arrest, Anaphylactic reactions. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Chlormethiazole (Edisylate) therapy.The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute over dosage of Chlormethiazole (Edisylate) include Respiratory depression.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Chlormethiazole (Edisylate) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Skin rashes, Thrombophlebitis, Sneezing, Conjunctival irritation, Nasal congestion.

Patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, because it may cause drowsiness. Avoid use in patient with acute pulmonary insufficiency. Chlormethiazole should be used with caution in patients with chronic pulmonary insufficiency, renal (kidney), liver, cerebral or cardiac disease and respiratory disease.

Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Liver Malfunction, and Geriatrics.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
