Overview
Chlortetracycline is a broad spectrum tetracycline antibiotic. Tetracyclines are derivative of polycyclic naphthacenecarboxamide. They are bacteriostatic and effective against many gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Chlortetracycline is isolated from Streptomyces aureofaciens. It was introduced in 1948 and was the first of the tetracycline group to be discovered. Chlortetracycline (HCl) is used as an antibacterial and antiprotozoal administered orally, by intravenous injection, or applied topically to the conjunctiva. Antibiotics require constant drug level in body for therapeutic effect. This is achieved by taking the drug at regular interval of time throughout the day and night as prescribed. Chlortetracycline (HCl) is important to take the drug for the full time period as prescribed. If you discontinue the drug, it may result in ineffective treatment.
Indications
Chlortetracycline (HCl) is primarily indicated in conditions like Acne, Bacterial infections, Genitourinary tract infections, GI infections, Ophthalmic infections, Pneumonia, Pyogenic infections, Respiratory tract infections, Soft tissue infections.
Contraindications
Chlortetracycline (HCl) is contraindicated in conditions like Systemic lupus erythematosus,Hypersensitivity, Renal impairment, Hepatic impairment.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Chlortetracycline (HCl), which give rise to further complications include Staining of developing teeth, Hypoplasia of enamel, Superinfection, Sever sun burn, Gastric discomfort. Chlortetracycline (HCl) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Phototoxicity, Fatal liver damage, Anaphylaxis, effects on classified tissues, Hepatic necrosis, fatal necrosis, Fatal liver damage. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Chlortetracycline (HCl) therapy. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute over dosage of Chlortetracycline (HCl) include Hypotension, Nausea, Vomiting, Coma, Jaundice, Raised hepatic enzymes, Abdominal pain, Intestinal hemorrhage, Lethargy. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Chlortetracycline (HCl) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Nausea, Anorexia, Diarrhea, Skin rashes, Stomatitis, Vaginitis, Glossitis, Hemolytic anemia, Thrombocytopenia, Intracranial hypertension, Enterocolitis, Bulging fontanelle in Infants, Anogenital inflammatory lesions, Vestibular problems.
Warnings
Do not administer to chickens within 24 hours of slaughter. Do not use in laying chickens. Do not administer to growing turkeys within 24 hours of slaughter. Zero day withdrawal in swine. Do not administer to cattle within 24 hours of slaughter. Do not use in lactating dairy cattle. A withdrawal period has not been established in pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal.
High Risk Groups

Adult Dosage
3.57 mg/kg (3.6 (3.57)) 6 hourly PO — - Scraped Dose — Dosages in terms of packets per 512 gallons are based on stated dosages per unit of body weight and average water consumption of the species. Weather conditions, ambient temperature, humidity, age, class of livestock and other factors may affect consumption and, except where calves are drenched, the unit dosage should be used as a guide to effective use in drinking water. Animals must actually consume enough medicated water to provide the desired therapeutic dose under the conditions that prevail.
