Overview
Cinnarizine is an antihistamine and calcium channel blocker of the diphenylmethylpiperazine group.It is prescribed for nausea and vomiting due to motion sickness or other sources such as chemotherapy, vertigo, or Meniere's disease.
Indications
Cinnarizine is primarily indicated in conditions like Motion sickness, Peripheral arterial disease, Peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud`s syndrome, Vestibular disorders, Vestibular symptoms of central and peripheral origin, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Nausea and vomiting, Raynaud's disease, Vertigo.
Contraindications
Cinnarizine is contraindicated in conditions like Hypotension,Parkinson's disease.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Cinnarizine, which give rise to further complications include Tardive dyskinesia, Parkinsonism, Extrapyramidal symptoms. Cinnarizine produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Respiratory depression, Convulsions, Drowsiness. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Cinnarizine therapy.The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute over dosage of Cinnarizine include Convulsions, Drowsiness, Respiratory depression, Dizziness, Hypopyrexia, In coordination.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Cinnarizine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Drowsiness, GI upset, Hypotension, Depression, Unsteadiness.
Warnings
Patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, because may cause drowsiness. Cinnarizine should be used with caution in patients with liver impairment, dose should be reduced in patients with renal impairment. Avoid use in young children and use with caution in elderly patients.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, Geriatrics, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
25 to 75 mg (50 (50)) 8 hourly PO — In Motion sickness half an hour before travelling.
