Overview
Ciprofibrate is an oral lipid regulating, a fibric acid derivative with actions and uses similar to those of bezafibrate. Ciprofibrate is used in the treatment of type II a, II b, type III , and type IV hyperlipidemias.
Indications
Ciprofibrate is primarily indicated in conditions like Hypercholesterolemia, Hyperlipidemias of type IIa, IIb, III and IV in patients who have not responded adequately to diet., Hyperlipidemia, Hypertriglyceridemia.
Contraindications
Ciprofibrate is contraindicated in conditions like Renal impairment, Hepatic impairment.
Side Effects
Ciprofibrate produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Rhabdomyolysis, Myositis. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Ciprofibrate therapy. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Ciprofibrate are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Vertigo, Tiredness, Headache, Drowsiness, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Skin rashes, Impotence, Hair loss, Increased intracranial pressure.
Warnings
Clofibrate should not be given to patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, primary biliary cirrhosis, gallstone or gallbladder disorder or hypoalbuminemia state.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, patients suffering from Liver Malfunction, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
