Overview
Dantron is an anthraquinone stimulant laxative. Dantron is used in the treatment of constipation, but its used is now restricted only to elderly, or to terminally ill patients, because of the concern over rodent carcinogenicity.
Indications
Dantron is primarily indicated in conditions like Constipation.
Contraindications
Dantron is contraindicated in conditions like Pregnancy.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Dantron are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Abdominal cramps, Colored (red) urine.
Warnings
The indications for Dantron are limited by its potential carcinogenicity (based on rodent carcinogenic studies) and evidence of genotoxicity. It should not be used in infants wearing nappies (Diapers) As it may cause discoloration and sloughing of skin.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
16 mg (16 (16)) As recommended. PO — For the prevention of post-operative nausea and vomiting: This dose should be given one hour prior to induction of anaesthesia.
8 mg (8 (8)) As recommended. PO — For patients receiving emetogenic chemotherapy or radiotherapy: This dose should be administered 1-2 hours before treatment, followed by 8 mg orally twelve hourly.
Child Dosage
25 to 12.5 mg (19 (18.75)) As recommended. P/O — Age 12 or above.
