Overview
Diethylpropion (HCl) is anorectic agent, it is also called Amfepramone. Diethylpropion (HCl) is used as an appetite suppressant in conjunction with diet plan to reduce weight.
Indications
Diethylpropion (HCl) is primarily indicated in conditions like Obesity.
Contraindications
Diethylpropion (HCl) is contraindicated in conditions like Glaucoma, Hypertension, Hyperthyroidism, Psychosis, Pulmonary hypertension, Cardiopathy, Arteriosclerosis, Agitated state, History of drug abuse, Pregnancy (especially first trimester), Concurrent use with other anorectic agents.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Diethylpropion (HCl), which give rise to further complications include Psychosis, Depression, Unstable personality, Psychological dependence. Diethylpropion (HCl) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Cardiac arrhythmias, Pulmonary hypertension, which are responsible for the discontinuation of Diethylpropion (HCl) therapy. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute over dosage of Diethylpropion (HCl) include Tachycardia, Confusion, Tachypnea, Mydriasis, Agitation, Delusions, Unstable blood pressure. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Diethylpropion (HCl) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Drowsiness, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Abdominal cramps, Constipation, Insomnia, Nervousness, Dry mouth, Allergic reactions, Sweating, Depression, Gynecomastia, Increased precordial pain.
Warnings
Patient should observe caution while driving or performing other task requiring alertness because it may produce dizziness, extreme fatigue and depression. Diethylpropion should be used with caution and monitor blood pressure in patient with mild hypertension. Dose titration and dose discontinuance may be necessary in epileptic patients. Hallucinations have occurred rarely following high doses of the drug. Stimulants may unmask tics in tourette's syndrome, use with caution.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, Geriatrics, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

0.357 mg/kg (0.36 (0.357)) 8 hourly PO — For 3-6 Weeks
