Overview
Drotaverine is Cholinergic muscarinic antagonist. Drotaverine is used in smooth muscle spasm and stone formation. It is structurally related to papaverine, and is a selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase-4.
Indications
Drotaverine is primarily indicated in conditions like Biliary spasm, Cholangitis, Cholecystitis, Cholecystolithiasis, Cystitis, Nephrolithiasis, Papillitis, Smooth muscle spasm, Stone formation, Ureterolithiasis, Urinary spasm, Urolithiasis, Vesical tenesmus.
Contraindications
Drotaverine is contraindicated in conditions like Cardiac insufficiency, Av block of ii &iii degree, Renal insufficiency, Hepatic insufficiency.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Drotaverine, which give rise to further complications include Porphyria. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Drotaverine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Vertigo, Headache, Nausea, Vomiting, Palpitation, Constipation, Insomnia, Dry mouth, Hypotension, Heating sensation.
Warnings
Fusidic acid is metabolized by the liver and excreted mainly through the bile, periodic liver function test should be carried out in the patient with liver dysfunction abnormalities in the biliary pathway or when the Fusidic acid is given for prolonged periods, or when it is given in combination with other antibiotics which have similar excretion pathways, e.g. lincomycin and rifampicin.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, and patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
