Overview
Estriol is a naturally occurring estrogen with actions and uses similar to those of estradiol. Estriol is claimed to have a mild proliferative effect on endometrium. Estriol is used for menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Estriol is used intravaginally for the short-term treatment of menopausal atrophic vaginitis as a cream or as pessaries.
Indications
Estriol is indicated in conditions like Menopausal hormone replacement therapy, Infertility due to cervical hostility, can be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Menopausal Atrophic Vaginitis.
Contraindications
Estriol is contraindicated in conditions like Pregnancy, Breast feeding.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Estriol are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Vomiting, Abdominal cramps, Breast enlargement, Weight changes, Sodium and fluid retention, Spotting, Cervical hypersecretion.
Warnings
Prolonged exposure to unopposed estrogens may increase risk of developing endometrial cancer; migraine (or migraine like headaches); interrupt treatment periodically to assess need for continued treatment; diabetes (increased risk of heart disease); history of breast nodules or fibrocystic disease; closely monitor breast status; risk factors for estrogen-dependent tumors (e.g. breast-cancer in first degree r elative); uterine fibroids may increase in size, symptoms of endometriosis may be exacerbated; factors predisposing to thromboembolism; presence of phospholipid antibodies (increased risk of thrombotic events).
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages, he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
0.5 to 3 mg (1.8 (1.75)) 24 hourly PO — For upto 1 month. Then 0.5-1.0 mg daily until restoration of epithelial integrity.
