Overview
Fenoterol is a direct acting sympathomimetic with beta adrenoceptor stimulant and is used as bronchodilator. Fenoterol (HBr) used only in the management of acute episode of asthma. Fenoterol (HBr) relaxes the smooth muscle in the lungs and expands the bronchi (air ways) in lungs and makes the breathing easy.
Indications
Fenoterol is primarily indicated in conditions like Asthma, Bronchitis, Bronchospasm, Labor pain.
Contraindications
Fenoterol is contraindicated in conditions like Eclampsia.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Fenoterol, which give rise to further complications include Flushing, Dizziness, Hives. Fenoterol produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Sudden death, Dysrhythmias, which are responsible for the discontinuation of Fenoterol therapy. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute over dosage of Fenoterol include Tachycardia, Hypokalemia, Irritability, Irregularities in heart rhythm. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Fenoterol are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Nervousness, Dry mouth, Coughing, Tremor, Trembling.
Warnings
Fenoterol should be given with cution in hyperthyroidism,myocardial insufficiency.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
0.007 to 0.035 mg/kg (0.021 (0.021)) 6 hourly Inhalation — -
100 to 200 mcg (150 (150)) 8 hourly oral —
Child Dosage
8 ug/kg (8 (8)) 8 hourly Inhalation — Recommended for 6-12 Years of Children
