Overview
Fosfomycin is an antibiotic that fights bacterial infections in the urinary tract. It is available in two formulations: Granules for oral solution (Monurol, generic) : Used for uncomplicated bladder infections in women Intravenous infusion (Contepo) : Used for complicated urinary tract infections in adults 18 years and older. Both forms work against common bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, including Escherichia coli ( E. coli ).
Indications
Fosfomycin is an antibiotic that fights bacterial infections in the urinary tract. It is available in two formulations: Granules for oral solution (Monurol, generic) : Used for uncomplicated bladder infections in women Intravenous infusion (Contepo) : Used for complicated urinary tract infections in adults 18 years and older. Both forms work against common bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, including Escherichia coli ( E. coli ).
Contraindications
Fosfomycin is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Fosfomycin are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Diarrhea, Vaginitis, Asthenia, Increased intracranial pressure, Anorexia, Epigastric discomfort, Pruritus.
Warnings
Fosfomycin should be used with caution in patients with medical history, including any allergy, especially drug allergy or kidney disease. It should be used with caution during pregnancy and not recommended during lactation. Caution is advised for use in females under 18 years old.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
1 g (1 (1)) 8 hourly IM — 1 to 4 g (2.5 (2.5)) 8 hourly IV — 3 g (3 (3)) As recommended. PO — As a single dose or 2 div.doses.
Child Dosage
100 to 200 mg/kg (150 (150)) 8 hourly Intra Venous — - 25 mg/kg (25 (25)) 6 hourly Oral — - 50 mg/kg (50 (50)) 8 hourly Intra Muscular — -
Neonatal Dosage
100 to 400 mg/kg (250 (250)) 24 hourly Intravenous — 31.25 mg/kg (31 (31.25)) 12 hourly Intramuscular —
Drug Interactions
