Overview

Fusidic Acid is an antibiotic that is often used topically in creams and eyedrops, but may also be given systemically as tablets or injections. Fusidic acid acts as a bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor by preventing the turnover of elongation factor G (EF-G) from the ribosome. It is used to treat the infection caused by penicillin resistant staphylococci.

Indications

Fusidic Acid is primarily indicated in conditions like Bone and joint infection, Cystic fibrosis, Endocarditis, Food allergy, Muscle relaxation (rapid onset, short duration), Osteomyelitis, Pneumonia, Septicaemia, Skin infections, Small cell carcinoma, Soft tissue infections.

Contraindications

Fusidic Acid is contraindicated in conditions like Hepatic failure, Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Fusidic Acid, which give rise to further complications include Jaundice, Cholestasis, Hemolysis, Hyperbilirubinemia. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Fusidic Acid are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Vomiting, Diarrhea, Rashes, Pruritus, GI symptoms, Epigastric pain.

Warnings

Use of topical preparation near the eyes should be avoided because of potential conjunctival irritation. Parenterally the drug should be infused slowly to decrease the incidence of thrombophlebitis and vasospasm. Oral administration should be instituted as soon as possible. Long term topical therapy should be avoided particularly is infants & children.

High Risk Groups

Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, and patients suffering from Liver Malfunction. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Adult Dosage

0.5 mg (0.5 (0.5)) 12 hourly Ophthalmic — - 1 % (1 (1)) 6 hourly Ophthalmic — drops. 2 % (2 (2)) 8 hourly Topical — - 500 mg (500 (500)) 8 hourly PO, IV —

Child Dosage

1 % (1 (1)) 12 hourly Opthalmic — For Paeds of all ages 25 mg/kg (25 (25)) 8 hourly Oral — - 6 to 7 mg/kg (6.5 (6.5)) 8 hourly Slow IV — Over 6 Hours

Neonatal Dosage

12.5 mg/kg (12 (12.5)) 8 hourly Oral — 6 to 7 mg/kg (6.5 (6.5)) As recommended. Slow Intravenous —
