Overview
Glucomannan is a dry powder extracted from the tubers of Amorphophallus konjac. It has been used as an anorectic. It acts by absorbing liquid in the gastro-intestinal tract. It may also be used as a dietary adjunct in the management of diabetes mellitus.
Indications
Glucomannan is primarily indicated in conditions like Constipation, Decreased appetite, Hypercholesterolemia, Obesity.
Contraindications
Glucomannan is contraindicated in conditions like Intestinal obstruction, Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Glucomannan are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Fecal impaction, Intestinal obstruction, Esophageal obstruction.
Warnings
It should always be taken with sufficient fluid and should not be take immediately before going to bed. It should be avoided in patients who have difficulty swallowing.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
3 to 4 g (3.5 (3.5)) 24 hourly PO — As laxative
500 to 700 mg/100cal (600 (600)) As recommended. PO — For controlling blood sugar

Drug Interactions
Because of glucomannan's potential ability to lower blood glucose, use caution in patients receiving oral hypoglycemic agents, insulin, or alternative medicines that could potentially lower glucose levels. Additionally, glucomannan may reduce the bioavailability of other oral medications. Thus, it is recommended that other medications be taken 1 hour before or 4 hours after glucomannan administration.
