Overview
Ichthammol mildly astringent, irritant and local antibacterial agent with moderate emollient and demulcent properties. Ichthammol belongs to a class of preparations containing as essential constituents salts or compounds of a mixture of acids designated by the group name sulfoichthyolic acid, formed by the sulfonation of oil obtained in the destructive distillation of certain bituminous shales. Sulfoichthyolic acid is characterized by a high sulfur content, the sulfur existing largely in the form of sulfonates, sulfones & sulfatides.
Indications
Ichthammol is primarily indicated in conditions like Cervicitis, Degenerative diseases of joints, Eczema, Inflammatory skin disease, Otitis externa, Psoriasis, Vaginitis, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Burns, Insect bites.
Contraindications
Ichthammol is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity to the drug, Hypersensitivity to any component of product.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Ichthammol are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Irritant reactions, Sensitivity.
Warnings
For external use only. It is not used for eye, and it should not be used in deep wounds.
