Overview

Topical iodine is used to prevent and treat infections that may occur in minor scrapes and cuts. It works by killing bacteria that can cause infections.

Indications

Topical iodine is used to prevent and treat infections that may occur in minor scrapes and cuts. It works by killing bacteria that can cause infections.

Contraindications

Iodine is contraindicated in conditions like Asthma, Hyperkalemia, Acne vulgaris, Tuberculosis, Goiter, Hypersensitivity, Bronchitis, Vasculitis, Thomsen's disease.

Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur: Rare Blistering, crusting, irritation, itching, or reddening of skin Symptoms of overdose (when swallowed) Abdominal or stomach pain diarrhea fever nausea not being able to pass urine thirst, severe vomiting Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Warnings

Observed patients closely for acute iodide toxicity, if symptoms appear discontinue the therapy. It should be used with caution in patient with hyperthyroidism, cardiac disease or renal (kidney) impairment. Prolong use during pregnancy is not advised.

High Risk Groups

Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, Cardiac / Hypertensive Patients, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Adult Dosage

0.086 mg/ kg (0.086 (0.086)) 8 hourly PO — 0.1 to 0.3 % (0.2 (0.2)) As recommended. PO — Should be taken with water or milk.

Child Dosage

0.1 to 0 ml (0.05 (0.05)) As recommended. —

Drug Interactions
