Overview
Chemically Ketanserin (Tartrate) is (+)-3-[2-[4-fluorobenzoyl)-1-piperidinyl]-2, 4 [1H, 3H]-quinazoline-dione. Ketanserin (Tartrate) is prepared by chemical synthesis and the dextrorotatory stereoisomer is used clinically. Ketanserin (Tartrate) is a serotonin antagonist with a high affinity for peripheral serotonin-2 (5-HT-2) receptors and thus inhibits serotonin-induced vasoconstriction, bronchoconstriction and platelet aggregation.it has also some a-1 antagonist and histamine H-1antagonist properties, but the clinical significance of these is controversial. Ketanserin is used in the management of hypertension and has also been tried in a variety of other conditions.
Indications
Ketanserin (Tartrate) is primarily indicated in conditions like Acute hypertensive episodes, Essential hypertension, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Bronchospasm, Vasodilator.
Contraindications
Ketanserin (Tartrate) is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity to any component of product.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Ketanserin (Tartrate), which give rise to further complications include Ventricular tachycardia. Ketanserin (Tartrate) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Ventricular arrhythmias. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Ketanserin (Tartrate) therapy. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Ketanserin (Tartrate) include Drowsiness, Visual disturbances, Syncope, Sleepiness. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Ketanserin (Tartrate) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Drowsiness, Fatigue, Dry mouth, Sedation, Light headedness, Lack of concentration, GI disturbance.
Warnings
Patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, because it may cause drowsiness. Ketanserin should be used with caution in patients receiving antiarrhythmics or those with 2nd or 3rd degree A.V. block. Caution should be taken to avoid hypokalemia in patients taken Ketanserin with diuretics.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to patients suffering from Liver Malfunction, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

0.042 to 0.428 mg/kg.min (0.23 (0.235)) As recommended. IV Inf — As Required
0.142 mg/kg (0.14 (0.142)) As recommended. IM — Every 15-30 minutes, As Required
