Overview
Meptazinol is opioid agonist -antagonist with partial opioid agonist activity at the u-1opiod receptor; which mimic effects of naturally occurring pain reducing chemicals(endorphins). It also has cholinergic activity. Meptazinol is used orally and parenterally in the treatment of moderate to severe pain.
Indications
Meptazinol is primarily indicated in conditions like Acute pain, Chronic pain, Moderate to severe pain.
Contraindications
Meptazinol is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Meptazinol, which give rise to further complications include Hallucinations, Vertigo, Bradycardia, Sweating. Meptazinol produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Respiratory depression, which are responsible for the discontinuation of Meptazinol therapy. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Meptazinol are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Drowsiness, Nausea, Vomiting, Constipation, Confusion, GI disturbance.
Warnings
Do not drive because Meptazinol may cause drowsiness. Use with caution in asthma, children, elderly people, head injury etc.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, patients suffering from Liver Malfunction, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
