Overview
Methohexitone (Na) is ultra short acting barbiturate hypnotic and used for the induction of anesthesia. Actions and adverse effects similar to thiopentone sodium.
Indications
Methohexitone (Na) is primarily indicated in conditions like Induction of anaesthesia.
Contraindications
Methohexitone (Na) is contraindicated in conditions like Epilepsy, Porphyria, Relative cardiovascular disease, hypotension, Respiratory disease.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Methohexitone (Na), which give rise to further complications include Gangrene, Thrombosis. Methohexitone (Na) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Bronchospasm, Cardiovascular collapse. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Methohexitone (Na) therapy. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Methohexitone (Na) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Local pain, Hiccups, Coughing, Muscle twitching and laryngospasm, Hypotension, Nausea, vomiting, Abdominal pain, Headache, Swelling, Ulceration, Necrosis.
Warnings
Exercise caution in patients with impaired function of respiratory, circulatory, kidney, liver or endocrine system. Avoid extravascular and intra-arterial injection of methohexitone because it may cause pain, swelling, ulceration, necrosis and gangrene of extremities respectively.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, Cardiac / Hypertensive Patients, Geriatrics, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
20 to 40 mg (30 (30)) As recommended. IV intermittent — Maintenance dose; on every 4-7 minutes.
50 to 120 mg (85 (85)) As recommended. IV — Initial dose; It provieds about 5-7 minutes of anesthesia.
