Overview
Methamphetamine is a sympathomimetic amine with CNS stimulant activity. Peripheral actions include elevation of systolic and diastolic blood pressures and weak bronchodilator and respiratory stimulant action. Drugs of this class used in obesity are commonly known as "anorectics" or "anorexigenics". It has not been established, however, that the action of such drugs in treating obesity is primarily one of appetite suppression.
Indications
Methylamphetamine is primarily indicated in conditions like Hyperactivity, Narcolepsy, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Obesity.
Contraindications
Methylamphetamine is contraindicated in conditions like Diabetes mellitus,Epilepsy,Hypertension,Hyperthyroidism,Cardiovascular disease,Arteriosclerosis.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Methylamphetamine, which give rise to further complications include Tachycardia, Allergic reactions, Restlessness, Irritability, Chest pain, Nervousness, Tremors, Tachycardia.Methylamphetamine produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Liver stroke, Heart failure. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Methylamphetamine therapy.The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Methylamphetamine include Tachycardia, Palpitations, Tremor, Hypertension, Dysphoria, Euphoria, Hyperflexia, Urticaria.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Methylamphetamine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Diarrhea, Constipation, Dry mouth, Dry mouth, dizziness.
Warnings
Methamphetamine tablets should be used with caution in patients with even mild hypertension. Methamphetamine should not be used to combat fatigue or to replace rest in normal persons. Prescribing and dispensing of methamphetamine should be limited to the smallest amount that is feasible at one time in order to minimize the possibility of overdosage. Tolerance to the anorectic effect usually develops within a few weeks. When this occurs, the recommended dose should not be exceeded in an attempt to increase the effect; rather, the drug should be discontinued
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, Cardiac / Hypertensive Patients, and Geriatrics.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
