Overview
Moexipril is an oral angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and is used to treat hypertension. Like quinapril and Ramipril, the active metabolite is produced by de-esterification from the prodrug. Moexiprilat (the de-esterified form), is about 1000 times active than moexipril itself and antihypertensive activity entirely depends on this metabolite. Prolonged antihypertensive effects allow for once-daily dosing. The dosage range is halved in patients who are taking diuretics or who have renal impairment. It was approved by FDA on April 19, 1995.
Indications
Moexipril is primarily indicated in conditions like Hypertension.
Contraindications
Moexipril is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Moexipril, which give rise to further complications include Fever, Allergic reactions, Chest pain, Irregular heart beat. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Moexipril include fatigue, Dizziness, Fainting, Weakness. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Moexipril are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Nausea, Diarrhea, Anxiety, Palpitation, Rashes, Itching, Flushing, Chest pain.
Warnings
Use caution when driving as Moexipril may cause dizziness. Use alcohol cautiously as moexipril may further lower blood pressure. Do not use salt substitute or potassium supplements. Cautions should be taken in allergic patients.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
7.5 mg (7.5 (7.5)) 24 hourly PO — Initial dose: Should be taken 1 hour prior to meals.
7.5 to 30 mg/day (19 (18.75)) 24 hourly PO — Maintenance dose: Should be taken in 1-2 divided doses 1 hour before meals.
