Overview
Moxonidine is antihypertensive agent acts on imidazoline sub-type 1 receptors to the brain medulla. Used alone or in combination therapy to reduce mild to moderate blood pressure. It is a new-generation alpha-2/imidazoline receptor agonist antihypertensive drug licensed for the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension.
Indications
Moxonidine is primarily indicated in conditions like Hypertension, Mild iron-deficiency anemia.
Contraindications
Moxonidine is contraindicated in conditions like Depression, Glaucoma, Epilepsy, Parkinsonism, Raynaud's phenomenon, Sick sinus syndrome.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Moxonidine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Tiredness, Headache, Anorexia, Constipation, Sleep disturbances, Dry mouth, Itching, Burning, Asthenia.
Warnings
Moxonidine should not be given to patients with conduction disorder, bradycardia, severe arrhythmias, severe heart failure, severe ischemic heart disease, severe liver or kidney impairment or history of angioedema. It should not be stopped abruptly but should be withdrawn gradually over 2 weeks.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, Cardiac / Hypertensive Patients, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, and patients suffering from Liver Malfunction. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
