Overview
Ornidazole is a nitroimidazole antiprotozoal agent used in ameba and trichomonas infections. It is partially plasma-bound and also has radiation-sensitizing action.
Indications
Ornidazole is primarily indicated in conditions like Amebiasis, Amoebic dysentry, Bacterial vaginosis, Giardiasis, Trichomoniasis.
Contraindications
Ornidazole is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Side Effects
The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Ornidazole include Nausea, fatigue, Headache, Rashes, Vertigo, Insomnia, Pyrosis.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Ornidazole are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Weakness, Dizziness, Headache, Ataxia, Nausea, Skin rashes, Urticaria, Skin rashes, dizziness, Ataxia, Weakness.
Warnings
Special precautions are required in case of ataxia, vertigo, mental confusion and patients with neurological diseases. There is need for adjustment of dosage and dosage interval in patients with hepatic impairment. Modification of the usual dosage is not necessary in patients of renal failure however, additional post haemodialysis dose may be required in patients undergoing this procedure.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, and Geriatrics.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
1.5 gm (1.5 (1.5)) As recommended. PO — For the treatment of Amoebic dysentery once daily for 3 days. 500 mg (500 (500)) As recommended. PO — For the treatment of Trichomoniasis twice a day for 5 days.
Child Dosage
10 mg/kg (10 (10)) 12 hourly I/V — For 5 to 10 days 25 mg/kg (25 (25)) As recommended. Oral — As a single dose
