Overview
Oxamniquine is anthelmintic agent. Oxamniquine is a semisynthetic tetrahydroquinoline. Chemically Oxamniquine is 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-[(1-methylethyl) amino] methyl]-7-nitro-6-quinoline-methanol. Oxamniquine is the safe and active against all stages of Schistosomiasis. Oxamniquine is administered orally.
Indications
Oxamniquine is primarily indicated in conditions like Schistosomiasis.
Contraindications
Oxamniquine is contraindicated in conditions like Epilepsy.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Oxamniquine, which give rise to further complications include Hallucinations, Seizures, Psychosis. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Oxamniquine include Convulsions. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Oxamniquine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Drowsiness, Discoloration of urine.
Warnings
Oxamniquine should be used with caution in patients with history of epilepsy. Patient should observe caution while driving or performing tasks requiring alertness, because it may produce drowsiness or dizziness.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
15 to 20 mg/kg (18 (17.5)) As recommended. PO — Once, over 2 to 3 days
Child Dosage
10 to 15 mg/kg (12 (12.5)) 12 hourly Oral — For 1-3 Days
Neonatal Dosage
10 to 15 mg/kg (12 (12.5)) 12 hourly Oral — For 1-3 Days
