Overview
Oxyphenbutazone, a metabolite of phenylbutazone, is an NSAID. It has been applied topically to the eye as an anti-inflammatory ointment in conditions such as episcleritis. Oxyphenbutazone was used systemically in disorders such as ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis but such use is no longer considered justified owing to the risk of severe haematological adverse effects.
Indications
Oxyphenbutazone is primarily indicated in conditions like Fever, Gout, Osteoarthritis, Pain, Rheumatoid arthritis.
Contraindications
Oxyphenbutazone is contraindicated in conditions like Peptic ulcer,Blood dyscrasias,Congestive heart failure,Hepatitis.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Oxyphenbutazone, which give rise to further complications include Allergic reactions, Abdominal pain, Blurred vision.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Oxyphenbutazone are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Weakness, Headache, Drowsiness, Irritability, Diarrhea, Heart burn, Bruising, Weight loss, Loss of appetite.
Warnings
Oxyphenbutazone should be used with caution in patients with incipient cardiac failure, blood dyscrasias, pancreatitis, kidney or liver diseases, gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation.patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, because it may cause drowsiness. It should not be given intramuscularly or injected in any place other than a vein, as it can cause tissue damage. Tissue damage and edema may also occur if the drug is injected repetitively into the same vein.
