Contraindications
Paregoric is contraindicated in conditions like Convulsions,Tetanus,Hypersensitivity to any component of product.
Side Effects
WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Tell your
doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect:
Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash ; hives; itching ; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever ; wheezing ;
tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue,
or throat. Very bad dizziness or passing out. Trouble breathing, slow breathing, or shallow breathing. Feeling confused. Feeling very sleepy. A fast heartbeat . A heartbeat that does not feel normal. Seizures. Mood changes. Very bad constipation . Trouble passing urine. Change in eyesight.
Warnings
Paregoric should be used with extreme caution in patients with disorders characterized by hypoxia, since even usual therapeutic doses of narcotics may decrease respiratory drive to the point of apnea while simultaneously increasing airway resistance. Because of a possible vagolytic action that may produce a significant increase in the ventricular response rate, Paregoric should be used with caution in patients with atrial flutter and other supraventricular tachycardias. Paregoric appears in the milk of nursing mothers. Caution should be exercised when paregoric is administered to a nursing woman. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with morphine. It is not known whether morphine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Paregoric should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. This preparation should not be used in diarrhea caused by poisoning until the toxic material is eliminated from the gastrointestinal tract.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, patients suffering from Liver Malfunction, and Geriatrics.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
5 to 10 ml (7.5 (7.5)) As recommended. PO — 1-4 times daily.
