Overview
Pectin is a heteropolysaccharide polymer of sugar acids of fruit or a purified carbohydrate product obtained from the dilute acid extract of the inner portion of the rind of citrus fruits or from apple pomace. Mainly it contains partially methoxylated poygalacturonic acids. It acts as a protective in the treatment of diarrhea. Pectin is also used as an emulsifying agent in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
Indications
Pectin is primarily indicated in conditions like Advanced ovarian cancer, Bacterial infections, Inflammation, Lung cancer.
Contraindications
Pectin is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity to any component of product.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Pectin are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Constipation, Fecal impaction.
Warnings
Pectin should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or lactation. It should be used with caution in patients with any pre-existing heart disease, bowel disease or allergy.

If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Drug Interactions
Coadministration of pectin with beta-carotene–containing foods or supplements can reduce blood levels of beta-carotene by more than 50%.
Pectin may decrease the serum concentration of cardiac glycosides, quinidine, and trimethoprim and the absorption of lincosamide. Pectin may diminish the therapeutic effect of lovastatin.
