Overview

Elemental Phosphorus is no longer used in medicine. Inorganic phosphates are used in deficiency states and bone diseases. It is used as a stimulant to stomach secretion.

Indications

Phosphorus is primarily indicated in conditions like Bone (Paget's) disease, Treatment of arrhythmias.

Contraindications

Phosphorus is contraindicated in conditions like Addison's disease, Hyperkalemia, Urolithiasis.

Side Effects

The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Phosphorus, which give rise to further complications include Seizures, Cramps, Irregular heart beat. Phosphorus produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Coma, Convulsions, Delirium, Shock. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Phosphorus therapy. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Phosphorus are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Dizziness, Headache, Diarrhea, Confusion, Laxative effect, Nausea and vomiting, Stomachache, Numbness of hands & lips.

Warnings

In cardiac disease, Addison disease, acute dehydration, renal (kidney) insufficiency, chronic renal (kidney) disease, liver disease, pulmonary disease, toxemia of pregnancy, hypoparathyroidism and rickets, and if patient is on sodium and potassium restricted diet, in such cases use phosphorus with caution.

High Risk Groups

Drug should not be given to patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
