Overview
Povidone-Iodine is used as a pre-operative skin antiseptic. It is used as a component in artificial tears and contact lens solutions.
Indications
Povidone-Iodine is primarily indicated in conditions like Contaminated wounds, Pre-operative skin preparation, Superficial infections.
Contraindications
Povidone-Iodine is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity to any component of product.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Povidone-Iodine, which give rise to further complications include Hypersensitivity reactions, Severe pain on application, Iododerma. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Povidone-Iodine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Rashes, Pruritus, Skin irritation, Local edema, Mucous membrane irritation, Acneiform eruption.
Warnings
Highly toxic if ingested, sodium thiosulfate is the most effective chemical antidote, avoid contact with eyes. Regular or prolonged use should be avoided in patient with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
0.1 % (0.1 (0.1)) As recommended. Topical — Mouth wash.
0.6 % (0.6 (0.6)) As recommended. Ophthalmic — As required
