Overview
Smooth muscle relaxant with actions combining the effects of anticholinergics & calcium channel blockers, used orally to relax the bladder muscles in incontinence from spinal cord lesions or unstable bladder conditions. It may cause dry mouth, blurred vision & drowsiness.
Indications
Propiverine Hydrochloride is primarily indicated in conditions like Neurogenic bladder, Severe nausea and vomiting, Urgency and incontinence, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Urinary frequency, urgency and incontinence.
Contraindications
Propiverine Hydrochloride is contraindicated in conditions like Glaucoma, Myasthenia gravis, Pregnancy, Urinary retention, Phobic and obsessional states, For termination of pregnancy, Gastro-intestinal atony, Breast feeding.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Propiverine Hydrochloride are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Drowsiness, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Palpitation, Tachycardia, Skin reactions, Constipation, Dry mouth, Blurred vision, Faintness, Angioedema, Abdominal discomfort, CNS stimulation, Difficulty in micturition.
Warnings
Propiverine Hydrochloride should be used with caution in the elderly (especially if frail) and in those with autonomic neuropathy. It should also be used with caution in Hiatus hernia with reflux esophagitis, & in Hepatic impairment & Renal impairment. Antimuscarinics may worsen Hyperthyroidism, Coronary artery disease, Congestive heart failure, Prostatic hypertrophy, Arrhythmias & Tachycardia.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
60 mg/day (60 (60)) As recommended. PO — Should be given in divided doses and a daily dose of 60 mg should not be exceeded.
