Overview
Ritodrine (HCl) is a beta-2 agonist, relaxes the uterine smooth muscles. Ritodrine (HCl) is used to arrest uncomplicated premature labor between 24-33 weeks of gestation and it may permit a delay in delivery of at least 48 hours.
Indications
Ritodrine (HCl) is primarily indicated in conditions like Asphyxia, Oedema, Oliguria due to renal failure, Premature labor, Uncomplicated premature labor.
Contraindications
Ritodrine (HCl) is contraindicated in conditions like Hyperthyroidism, Heart disease, ECG abnormalities, Eclampsia, Chorioamnionitis, Cord compression, Intrauterine fetal death, Antepartum hemorrhage.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Ritodrine (HCl), which give rise to further complications include Hypokalemia, Hyperglycemia, Hyperlipidemic effects, Metabolic disturbances, Hyperinsulinemia. Ritodrine (HCl) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Pulmonary edema, Cardiac arrhythmia, Cardiopulmonary complications, Maternal death, Angina-like complaints. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Ritodrine (HCl) therapy. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Ritodrine (HCl) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Anxiety, Restlessness, Palpitation, Tremors, Erythema, Nausea and vomiting.
Warnings
Ritodrine should be used with caution in patients with hyperthyroidism, myocardial insufficiency, arrhythmias, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. It should be used with extreme caution during pregnancy.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Cardiac / Hypertensive Patients, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
0.71 ug/ kg.min (0.71 (0.71)) As recommended. IV Inf — Initially as required
10 mg (10 (10)) 4 hourly PO — As Required
10 to 20 mg (15 (15)) 6 hourly IM — For 2 Days
2.14 to 5 ug/ kg.min (3.6 (3.57)) As recommended. IV Inf — Maintenance for 12-48 Hours
