Overview
Senega is the dried root of Polygala, its common names are seneca snakeroot, senega root, mountain flax, a plant of North America. The main constituents of which are polygalic acid and senegenin; expectorant and emetic.
Indications
Senega is primarily indicated in conditions like Asthma, Bronchitis, Pharyngitis.
Contraindications
Senega is contraindicated in conditions like Peptic ulcer, Pregnancy, Inflammatory bowel disease (unlicensed use).
Side Effects
The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Senega include Emesis, GI irritation.
Warnings
Senega should be avoided to patients with intestinal obstruction or with undiagnosed abdominal symptoms. Care should be taken in patients with inflammatory bowl disease. Prolong use should be avoided.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
