Silymarin

Silymarin is the active principle from the fruit of Silybum marianum. Silymarin is a free radical scavenger, used for the treatment of hepatic disorders.

Silymarin is primarily indicated in conditions like Hepatitis, Hepatitis A infection, Jaundice, Dyspepsia and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Cirrhosis.

Silymarin is contraindicated in conditions like Hepatic encephalopathy, Primary biliary cirrhosis, Breast cancer, Endometriosis, Hormone sensitive conditions, Ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, Hypersensitivity to any component of product.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Silymarin include Diarrhea. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Silymarin are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Weakness, Headache, Joint pain, Stomach upset, Abdominal bloating, Allergic reactions, Anorexia, Nausea, Pruritus, Rash.

Should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women. People with a history of hormone-related cancers, including breast and uterine cancer and prostate cancer, should not take Silymarin. Should be use with caution in children.

Drug should not be given to Pediatrics, and Pregnant Mothers. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

There are mixed data regarding milk thistle's ability to exert inhibitory or inductive activity on cytochrome P450 (CYP-450) 1A2, 2C19, 2D6, 2E1, and 3A4, as well as P-glycoprotein. Therefore, close monitoring is warranted when drugs metabolized by these enzymes are given concomitantly with milk thistle.
