Overview
Sitosterol an antihyperlipidemic agent. Due to the structural similarity to cholesterol, Sitosterol competitively inhibits the absorption of cholesterol. Sitosterol used to lower high blood cholesterol levels. Sitosterol lower the risk of heart attack by preventing the formation of plaque into the blood vessels.
Indications
Sitosterol is primarily indicated in conditions like Benign prostatic hyperplasia, Hyperlipidemia.
Contraindications
Sitosterol is contraindicated in conditions like Pregnancy, Sitosterolemia, Breast feeding.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Sitosterol are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Nausea, Diarrhea, Constipation, Indigestion, Erectile dysfunction, Loss of libido, Gas.
Warnings
It should not be used in patients with rare genetic disorder, Sitosterolemia, Cerebroendodontic, Xanthomatosis. It's supplementation should be avoided in pregnant and nursing mothers.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Drug Interactions
Plant sterols reduce the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and vitamin E. No effects on vitamins A and K have been noted. Beta-sitosterol levels may decrease in patients receiving ezetimibe through its inhibition of intestinal absorption of plant sterols.
