Overview
Somatostatin is a growth hormone-inhibiting hormone. Somatostatin is used in the treatment of acromegaly due to hormone secreting tumors.
Indications
Somatostatin is primarily indicated in conditions like Acromegaly and Adjunct in ganciclovir treatment, Esophageal varices bleeding.
Contraindications
Somatostatin is contraindicated in conditions like Pregnancy, Lactation, Hypersensitivity to any component of product.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Somatostatin, which give rise to further complications include Thrombocytopenia, Extra systoles. The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Somatostatin include Transient bradycardia, Cramping. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Somatostatin are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Nausea and vomiting, Pyrexia, Hypoglycemia, Hypocalcemia.
Warnings
Blood sugar should be monitored since somatotropin may interfere with carbohydrate metabolism. Concomitant parental nutrition has been suggested because of the inhibitory effect on intestinal absorption.

If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
