Overview
Tazobactam (Na) is a triazole methyl penicillanic acid sulfone. Tazobactam (Na) is a potent inhibitor of many ß lactamase. Tazobactam (Na) is given in combination of piperacillin antibiotic, it enhances and extends the antibiotic spectrum of piperacillin to include many ß lactamase producing bacteria normally resistant to it and other ß lactam antibiotics.
Indications
Tazobactam (Na) is primarily indicated in conditions like Intra-abdominal infections, Respiratory tract infections, Septicemia, Skin infections, Urinary tract infection.
Contraindications
Tazobactam (Na) is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.
Side Effects
Tazobactam (Na) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Pseudomembranous colitis, Anaphylaxis. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Tazobactam (Na) therapy. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Tazobactam (Na) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Tiredness, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Fever, Dry mouth, Rashes, Erythema, Allergic reactions, Hallucination, Hot flushes, Muscular weakness, GI disturbance, Muscle pain, Reaction at injection site.
Warnings
Tazobactam should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, other illnesses or any allergy especially to penicillin or other antibiotics. It should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or lactation.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Adult Dosage
500 mg (500 (500)) 8 hourly Slow IV — In combinaiton with Piperacillin (Na).
